I’m not going to sugarcoat this, but children, particularly young men, need fathers in their lives. Or else, they would grow up without discipline, or important life lessons, or discipline on becoming a man. If they don’t have a father in their lives, they getting into behaviors that harm both them and anyone around them. An example would be joining becoming a delinquent and joining a gang. The character I have representing this aspect, is Maxwell Torchwood.
Maxwell, or Dynamax as his street name, is a human alien halfbreed know for blowing up authority vehicles with his fire gauntlets. However, after being caught by Paul and Harix, he is given the chance to pay off his crimes by helping with the Cyber Phantom case. His motivation is one day finding his father, who had been absent for most of his childhood.
When it comes to writing characters, I prefer not to go too much in their backstories and let their present actions determine their characters. For Maxwell, while I have established has a trouble maker without a father, I have also written him as someone that wants to do better despite not having guidance he should have received from his father. In fact, a couple times in the book, he does try to reach out to his biological father, who had a serous criminal record, which I will not spoil.
This is all I have to say about Maxwell for the time being. I encourage you to read the book and discover his family issues for yourselves. Until then, are there things you think I should have talked about or exapanded upon? What are your thoughts on delinquent characters or characters motivated from neglectful parents. I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
